ABOUT FLAX FIBERS (Linen)

FLAX FIBERS THE IDEAL COMPOSITE REINFORCEMENT MATERIAL NOT ONLY GREEN BUT HIGH TECH !

FLAX FIBERS are grown in Europe (85% of the world production).
Arround 90 000 hectare are cultivated every year.
France represents 70% of the total world production.

The global demand for flax fibers is strong and quite steady. FLAX FIBERS find their way in the following sectors: upholstery, fashion, technical, …and since only a few years … building construction, isolation, and composites…).
LINEN or FLAX is not only the oldest plant fiber grown by Mankind but also the key to our future because it is an environmental friendly culture and industry that enable us to cover a large spectrum of our needs.

The FLAX (LINEN) industry is the sole offering a complete chain from the fields to the composites within EUROPE.

Flax fiber properties:
Density of FLAX fibers are 1.45 making them nearly twice as light as glass fibers (2.6) lighter than carbon (1.8)
Damping properties (dampening ratio : FLAX: 1.47%, CARBON: 0.18%, GLASS: 0.15%)
Fatigue (better behavior in favor of FLAX compared to glass fibers)

Suitable FLAX Composites technics:

Pultrusion
Filament winding
Vaccum infusion (EPOXY or POLYESTER Compatible)
RTM
Compression molding (Thermoplastics)
